Letters to the editor: A cry for help

Could we start a conversation about the difficulties facing working people and families in Mallorca, and explore whether we could eventually send a letter to the Spanish Government, the Balearic Government and His Majesty the King of Spain?

Mallorca depends on tourism, but tourism cannot survive without the people who make it possible. Hotel workers, waiters, cleaners, shop workers, construction workers, carers, property workers and many others are struggling to afford to live here.

Rent has become so expensive that even people working full-time cannot always find a suitable home. For families and single parents, paying rent, food, school expenses, electricity and other basic costs can feel impossible. What will happen to Mallorca if the people who work here are forced to leave because they cannot afford to live here?

Seasonal work makes the situation even harder. Many workers only have employment for part of the year, while rent and living costs continue throughout the year. How are families expected to survive during the months when there is little or no work?

I have been wondering whether the Government could consider introducing a rent subsidy for low- and middle-income working families, helping to pay part of their monthly rent. Another possible idea could be increasing the minimum salary to €2,000 per month, giving full-time workers a better chance of paying their rent, supporting their families and providing their children with a decent future.

There could also be specific support for single parents and seasonal workers, who are especially affected by high rents and unstable employment.

I’m not a politician or an expert. I’m simply a working person and a parent who believes that something needs to change. I’m sharing this idea to see whether other people feel the same and whether we can work together to find out what can realistically be done.

Shouldn’t Mallorca be a place where the people who work here can also afford to live here?
I would really appreciate advice from anyone who has experience with community organisations, housing issues, politics, law or contacting the authorities.
Who would be the right people or organisations to contact?
How could we write and send a letter properly?
Would it be possible to organise a meeting or a community group to discuss these concerns?

Could we eventually collect support from people across Mallorca and present our concerns to the relevant authorities?
If you agree that this is an important issue, please comment below, share this post and tag anyone who may be able to help or offer advice.

This is not a petition yet. It is simply an idea and an invitation to start a conversation.
Maybe, by coming together, we can understand what steps are possible and find a constructive way to make our concerns heard.
Isn’t Mallorca our home too? ❤️
Don’t we work here?
Don’t we raise our families here?
Don’t we pay taxes here?
Don’t we contribute to Mallorca?
Shouldn’t we also be able to afford to live here?
